Instructions for Podcasting

If you have never recorded and encoded a podcast before, the process is quite easy. The following is a simple, step-by-step guide to what you need to do. More details about each step can be found in the resources listed in the descriptions or at the end of this page.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Recording:

1. Download the Audacity recording software here.

2. Install the Audacity on your laptop or PC.

• Follow the instructions on the Audacity download page here.

3. Download the mp3 encoder. One of the simplest is called LAME; you can find it here. CDex is also similarly useful.

4. Unzip the LAME download file and save the contents in a folder where you can easily find them.

5. Record your podcast using Audacity and your laptop’s built in microphone or any external microphone.

6. Save your file in Audacity when you are done.

7. Encode your saved audio file as an mp3 file:

• In Audacity, click on “File”, then “Export as mp3”. The first (and only the first) time you do this, Audacity will ask you for the location of the Lame_enc.dll file (one of the LAME files you unzipped).
• Browse to the location of the .dll file and click on/enter it in Audacity. Audacity will then ask you to pick a location to save your mp3 file. It also will ask you to fill out some “ID3” information. For title, enter something like “SocInfoTech Student Podcast" and for “Artist,” enter your name. Don’t worry about the rest of the fields.

Uploading:

All students should soon receive an email with login instructions to the "SocInfoTech Student Podcast".

1. Login to the "SocInfoTech Student Podcast" here.

2. Create a new post (click on "Write" in the Dashboard).

3. Choose the mp3 file on your computer to upload and click "Upload" (under "Description").

4. Type "Download the mp3" somwhere in your blog post and link the word "Download" to your uploaded mp3 file.

5. Click "Publish" and you're done.
